We're pulling an old Briggs and Stratton motor off of a product at work that's been sitting for something like 4 years. The engine runs, but smokes due to sitting for so long doing nothing. My father and I have been discussing various things to try and do with this thing, from building a hybrid car around it, to using it to power a mountain bike.
Anyone have any other ideas, or blueprints for a gokart we can build around a 3 HP brigs N stratt?

how big is the engine? cause if you can build a car around it then it must be pretty big, but if you can power a mountain bike with it then it must bbe pretty small, right?
i would say build some type of go kart of off road buggy, I dont see how you can go wrong with something like that

The hybrid car idea was to hook a generator loop to the end of the engine, hook in an array of 10 Optima Red top batteries, then get about a 40 or 50 HP DC motor and put it where the engine would normaly go on the car. Rig in a speed controller hooked to the accelerator, and suddenly I'd have a car capable of pulling some ungodly number of miles per gallon. Add a generator load braking system not unlike the Prius uses, and suddenly I have a limpwristed environmentaly friendly car that I can use to get to and from work, and get groceries that'll get 50 to 100 MPG. ( I don't know what the fuel consumption rate is on a small B&S motor)

Build a go kart out of something really neat like a shopping cart or something, I know it isnt original but its a good idea.

Yea I'd have to agree with everyone and say build something like a go-kart or something off-road capable. The car deal sounds nice, but almost seems like to big of a project, you know, the kind of thing that takes years and never really ever gets done. Maybe find an old buggy or something used, shred it apart, re-finish everything and re-build it with all the parts and stuff. I don't know, it'd be pretty cool to use all the old parts like that, and that's my best bet. I am jealous of you, I'd jump at any chance to start building stuff, especially a cart or something sweet like that.

that sounds really complicated and a lot of work, and A LOT of electrical know how.
I think you should build a off road buggy or something like that, that way you can run the hell of it and have some kickass fun.

I think I'm going to try and build a mariokart type buggy. My crazy old man wants to get an empty sand rail chasis, and mate it to the engine/drivetrain of a chrystler LHS. 280 HP out of a N/A V6 in a vehicle that weighs less than 1/4 what an LHS did would kick ass.

i think if i had a 3hp engine i would want to go for something extremly light rather than a hybrid affair, a tiny kart would be much easier to build and much easier to enjoy in the near future, as for plans i have no idea.

So does that mean that youre not using the 3 HP engine anymore?

with only a 3hp motor anything you build will not go very fast. a light go cart or a scooter of some kind or motorized bike would be the best ideas.

so the 3hp engine is not going to be used at all?
but I say go with the sand rail, those things are hella cool

Actually, the 280 HP sandrail is a different project.
I have a new problem... I was cleaning out the junk pile today, looking for some parts, and found another 10 year old lightly used 3 HP B&S motor that i need to do something with. :( at this rate, I'm going to be forced to try and make a "Beowulf cluster" to power a car.

lol, thats actually pretty cool i wish i had an kind of engine to build something around.
what woulod be hella kickass would be make a twin engine 4 wheel drive go kart, where each engine powers the rear tires, adn the other one powers the front tires. I you could pull that off it would be sweet.
