EL PASO ?Two young Mexican children were killed, and their mother and two sisters were hospitalized today after a sport utility vehicle ran over a family of street vendors while speeding toward a border crossing into the U.S., a Customs spokesman said.

A 19-year-old man was jailed in El Paso on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, said Roger Maier, spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
The ages of the killed children were not known. An 11-year-old girl and her mother were taken to a Juarez hospital, and a 2-year-old girl was taken to an El Paso hospital. The father of the children was not injured.
Authorities said the SUV didn't stop after the accident, and the man was arrested while waiting to cross the border. His identity was not released.
