Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Rossen is in the Cambria Heights section of Queens with the latest for us.
It happened next to a ball field here in Queens around 8:00 a.m. The officer reportedly saw a man in the park with marijuana. Police say the officer walked up to that man to make the arrest. They say the suspect fought back, and then shot the officer with the officer's own gun.
They came ready for battle: Within minutes of the shooting, police mobilized -- surrounding the neighborhood with riot gear and search dogs. They are looking for the suspect, considered armed and dangerous.
Resident: "The problem is, he has gun, He is out. I am sure the cops are doing a good job and they will catch him."
The officer was riding his scooter on patrol when he saw the suspect, and reportedly saw both the pot and a gun in the man's waistband. He drew his own weapon, and that's when it happened.
Ray Kelly, NYC Police Commissioner: "A struggle ensued, with the suspect reaching for the officer's gun. One round was discharged, striking the officer in the left knee."
He will, doctors say, make a full recovery. But at the scene, an all out search is on, both on the land and in the air.
The officer is a decorated 9-year veteran, and part of Operation Clean Sweep, an effort to target quality of life crimes. But how could he know it would end like this? Shot with his own gun.
Though the police officer is stable, and will be okay police obviously want very much to catch whoever did this. They've put up signs all over the neighborhood offering a $10,000 cash reward for any information leading to an arrest.
