All Terrain Pickup
by Polaris Industries

Polaris Industries chose the hill country of Texas to introduce a new concept in 4X4 quads. Texas being the pickup capital of the world, was an excellent choice to introduce the 2004 ATP or “All Terrain Pickup? Built on the shaft drive Magnum chassis with 6-inch longer wheel base, the pickup bed style rear storage box and the new front mounted storage container will make the new quad a very versatile machine.
The Pickup style box with tailgate Polaris asked the consumer what their needs were when looking for a new quad. The answers included storage capacity, hauling capacity, and able to easily adapt to different working situations. They want to be able to work, hunt, camp, or just trail ride on the same machine. Yet, they also want it to look nice when trail riding with the other guys, and not have that utility look. Polaris answered back with the ATP which includes some very unique and new ideas.
Dumping the bed The molded bed includes side rails, removable tailgate and pickup style tail lights. A handle on either side under the bed allows easy dumping of the bed contents with a gas shock helping assist and control the dumping operation. Along with the side rails, d-rings are also attached to the bed floor allowing for numerous ways of tying down any cargo. The molded bed also helps keep the cargo from shifting around unlike a utility type open rack system. Several add on accessories are available for the bed, including a hard plastic cover, aluminum tool box, aluminum dog box, a pickup style bed folding bed extender, and gun boot especially designed for the ATP. All of these accessories are easily secured to the bed with the included brackets. The folding bed extender increases the bed length by 6 inches, or when folded inside the bed provides a useful divider. These add-ons let you customize your ATP much like your full size pickup. A steel flatbed is also available and an easy replacement of the standard bed. Being made of steel allows the owner to customize the bed to his preference by cutting and welding on tools or accessories for his particular needs. Optional steel tube side rails are available from Polaris and easily attached to the sides of the bed. The steel flat bed connects to the same brackets as the regular bed allowing it to be able to dump also.
New Instrument Cluster The new design instrument cluster found on the ATP and the ?4 Sportsman is very easy to read and provides the owner/rider with most all the information they will need. A new feature allows the rider to change the odometer to read Miles per Hour or Kilometers per Hour; this will be a very useful feature for the Canadian riders. A service reminder icon will first show at 50 hours of use. The dealer will then have the ability to set the service intervals to meet the need and requirements of each individual. Icons light up for two wheel and four wheel drive allowing the rider to easily see what mode they are riding in
Polaris "Rolling Highway" This is a picture of the Polaris Rolling Highway which consisted of two rolling platforms under each rear tire and one under one of the front tires. This was used to demonstrate the three different combinations of the drive train. A handle bar mounted switch allows the rider to switch from “Turf?mode, 2 wheel drive, or 4 wheel drive. The Dana locking differential has electric operated solenoid to lock or unlock the rear axle. Un-locked, or “Turf?mode, a reduced turning radius allows for easier turning and less damage to the terrain, ideal for yards, or golf courses. Just a flick of the switch and the rear end is locked for more traction. One more position locks in the front wheels for true four wheel drive. The rolling highway allowed us to see how the different positions affected the drive wheels. All the positions can be easily switch selected at any speed, just let off the throttle momentarily, make the switch and go again
Turning Radius is smaller in Turf Mode The "Turf" mode allows the rear axle to be unlocked for a much tighter turning radius. On a 180 degree turn with rear rack loaded the ATP in turf mode will turn inside of a straight axle quad. This allows for much easier turning and practically no turf damage. This will be very important for landscaping or use on a golf course where turf damage must be eliminated. Locking the rear differential and turning the same turn again showed how much further the turning radius would be and also the damage done to the turf by the inside turning tire.
1 1/4 inch receiver hitchThis new reciever style trailer hitch which will be standard equipment on the ATP. is an automotive standard 1 ¼” receiver type hitch bolted to the Dana Rear axle differential. This standard size allows many different customizable options for the rider. Easier hookup of trailers and variety of hitches will allow the rider to adjust for different height trailers or different hitch types. These hitches will be available from Polaris or most any automotive store
Items are more secure The pickup style box on the rear, two storage bins on the rear fenders, and a nice storage box on the front provide ample storage and tie down spots for most everything you would need on a overnight camping trip. The folding lid on the front storage box folds forward which allows you to open the box without having to unload the cargo strapped down to the lid. An optional round tube rack can be attached to the lid, which it is already braced for, for even more stability of cargo. Optional key locking latches will be available for secure storage of items. The two rear fender mounted storage areas are approximately 11 inches deep and will hold a surprising amount of cargo. With all the enclosed storage and the design of the boxes front and rear, it hauls your cargo with ease and allows very little shifting around.
Polaris makes available many accessories for the ATP, Including windshields, winches, front and rear, saddle bags, storage racks, aluminum dog boxes, aluminum tool boxes, aluminum wheels, gun cases, and a hard cover for the rear box. These are just a few of the add-ons with many more available.
Polaris has really done their homework on this quad. The rear pickup box and the front storage box are not only very functional but very nice looking to! The locking differnential will also be a big selling point. We think this will be a very good seller for Polaris.
