| CAVE EXCURSION ICELAND ISLAND CAVES |
There are many caves in Iceland due to frequent volcano eruptions that have occurred over the centuries. Lava Caves are the most common caves in Iceland. They are confined to the neo-volcanic zone in Iceland, running across the country from southwest to northeast. The lava flows were formed over the last 10,000-13,000 years. Total coverage of lava flows in Iceland is about 10,000 sq. km, or about one-tenth of the entire island. Lava caves are found widely in the country, and great distances can be from one cave to another.
Two main kinds of lava formations are common: 1: Long pipes, formed by the roofing of a surface channel where a solidified surface scum can accumulate and thicken until it is strong enough to form a roof. Roofed channels are typically large and long. In addition, if smaller tubes have developed in overflows on the side of a channel, these may remain connected to the master tube to produce a complex pattern of simple, linear tubes. 2: Tubes, formed by drainage from beneath crusted lava lobes where the lava is delivered by a channel or major feeder tube, but then spreads out into a series of lobes .
Cave excursion experience Trip overview: We leave Reykjav¨ªk and head east and after a 40-minute drive we arrive at Arnarker cave. This is a large lava cave almost 500 meters long. The tunnel is narrow in the beginning, but the cave gets bigger as you get further in until it is quite wide and high with lots of ice formations (ice candles). These formations provide an exciting atmosphere when you aim your flashlight on them. A guest book is in the cave where we all write our names. You will walk on lave rocks, some with sharp edges so you need to wear good boots and gloves. After the Cave Experience we head for the most popular Lobster restaurant in Iceland, Vie Fj?ruboreie, for a delicious lobster experience.
