Driving in Sand: Part II

Here's Mike trying to get up the face of Choke Cherry Hill with a 1600 engine. Lowering tire pressure from 10 to 4.5 PSI got him further up the dune.

Help Out - If you see someone in need of help, offer assistance - you may need their help later on. One wet April at Florence, I needed help getting dug out of some quicksand, it was not something I could have done alone. I walked back to camp (about a mile) and knocked on the door of a travel trailer. I really had no option on who to ask for a hand, the trailer was the only other group in Driftwood II! The other campers (some quad riders) took my friend and I out to my rail on their ATVs - we all pulled my rail out. The quad riders who came to my rescue were much appreciated. The friendly culture of the dunes depends upon getting a hand when it is needed, getting unstuck is often a group effort.

As you explore the sand dunes, please keep them clean. It would be great if every sandrail driver would bring an empty plastic bag in their rig and collect any trash spotted in the dunes and campground. Personally, I don't bring glass to dune areas, I am concerned that broken shards might cut someone's paddle tires or injure their child. Respect the local law enforcement, it helps to be polite to the rangers. Follow the campground's rules regarding firewood, I have seen some folks use part of the area's wooden fence and get ticketed!
