Eyewitness News 11.com: Summer Safety Tips With Children

Summer Safety Tips With Children

May through August account for nearly half of all injury-related childhood deaths. July is the deadliest month.
During the summer months, when children are out of school, lack adequate supervision and spend more time outdoors, the risks to child safety are heightened.
Just because it is summer and you are on vacation, you should not let safety precautions go. In fact, you as a parent should be even more vigilant.
General safety for kids:
Always wear a seat belt or in a child safety seat when riding in a car.
Sit in the back seat whenever posssible.
Never swim without an adult present.
Wear a life jacket whenever you are on a boat or near open water.
Wear your helmet every time you ride your bike, scooter, skates, or skateboard.
Know the rules of the road and obey all traffic laws.
Don't use playground equipment unless an adult is present.
Wear the proper protective gear (make sure it fits!) when you practice and play sports. For parents:
Make sure all gates and fences are secure.
Lock up or cover all barbeque grills, gasoline containers, hot tubs, etc.
Warn your children about unacceptable play areas in the neighborhood, such as construction sites, railroad tracks & Dumpsters.
Remind your children that bikes are vehicles, not toys.
Never leave children alone in or near water.
If you are at the beach or lake, pay attention to the water conditions.
Apply sunscreen to your children before they go outside. Reapply often.
Teach your children to stay away from all plants, mushrooms and wild berries unless they are certain they are safe. Teach them how to identify poison oak and ivy and to stay away from them.
After periods of outdoor play, check your children thoroughly for ticks and other insect bites.
Teach your children not to disturb or provoke any wild animals or snakes they may encounter, either in the back yard or while camping or hiking. Resources:
