China (mainland)¨CExports of scooters from Mainland China were valued at $231 million from January to July 2004, a growth of 84 percent over exports in the same period in 2003.
Custom statistics show that exports increased month-on-month during the first seven months of the year, peaking in April at $44.2 million. Export growth, however, was highest in January when shipments totaled $30 million --117 percent over January 2003 exports of $11 million.
The midyear export value of $231 million is already 88 percent of 2003's entire exports worth $261.5 million. If the growth trend continues, 2004 year-end exports could very well exceed $350 million.
While output ranges from kick scooters to all-terrain vehicles, the lightweight motorized scooter with a speed of 30kph to 50kph, 49cc capacity and 250W to 300W power rating is the mainstream product.
Production of gas-powered models this year has been on the upswing following a growing demand from the United States. While two-stroke engines dominate gas-powered scooter production, there is a growing trend toward the more environment-friendly four-stroke models.
Design mainly focuses on frames, circuitry and overall safety. Most companies have their own design teams and funnel in 2 to 10 percent of sales revenues in R&D. New designs or products are released regularly as products usually stay "new" for only three months.
China-made scooters are exported mostly to Asia, which corners about 32 percent of shipments; North America (29 percent), the European Union (17 percent), the Middle East (7 percent), and South America (6 percent).
