Here at IWOOT we've seen a lot of remote control cars over the years and we're not easily scared, but the Gyro Force is completely bonkers. And we don't mean it in the way some people say "I'm mental, me. Look, I wear Daffy Duck ties"; we mean totally out-of-its-mind, should-be-locked-up-in-a-padded-cell, who-let-this-psycho-out insane. Beneath its aggressive looks lurks a dyed-in-the-wool killer. Imagine a super-charged boy-racer-mobile crossed with a lunatic shark.

When we took this beast out of its box to test it, we had no idea what was being unleashed. Maybe we should have taken the hint when we turned it on and it began making a sound like it was winding itself up to explode (more about this later). Our first mistake was testing it out in the IWOOT office - 5 minutes later the room was in tatters. This thing needs space, and lots of it. It is definitely NOT for gentle trips around the living room and bumping into your Gran's ankles - you would hospitalise her. We seriously recommend taking it to the park unless you have very comprehensive insurance - and we mean home, contents and life insurance.

For one thing it is seriously quick, there's no slow ramping up of acceleration - it only has two speeds: Bat-out-of-Hell-fast and SSSTO-OOOOP! Its scale speed is up to 200mph. Jeremy Clarkson would probably wet himself.

For another, the steering is clearly designed by someone with a death wish. The Gyro Force turns like a skateboard - in other words, both sets of wheels turn, but in opposite directions so when you turn left the front wheels pivot left while the rear wheels pivot right. This allows for fantastically sharp cornering, though it does take a little while to get the hang of - there are several bruised shins around the IWOOT office this morning.

But the real sting in the tail is the reason for the whirring noise this monster makes as soon as you turn it on. Inside the Gyro Force is - you guessed it - a motorised Gyroscope. In nuclear submarines and space vehicles these are used to stabilise the craft, but not in the Gyro Force. Oh, no. That would be way too sensible. Here it is used for the opposite: back-flipping, side-splitting, somersaulting, feeding-frenzy spasms of violence. When you hit the button, the Gyro Force goes nuts flipping, spinning and crashing around like a Piranha on a fishing hook. This is not only great fun - if not slightly frightening - but is also very handy. Unlike other (tamer) RC cars, if you flip it onto its back by going too fast, just hit the button and it will soon right itself so you don't end up looking a dork in the park by having to go and rescue it like some feeble tortoise.

This four-wheeled freak is not for the faint-hearted. If you are looking for high-speed, full-on, unpredictable, extreme nuttiness then this is the only remote control car for you.

You have been warned.
