About:
University faculty responsible for agricultural and rural safety. Appointment dictates 100% extension programming. Programs provided and areas of emphasis include pesticide safety, personal protective equipment, tractor and equipment safety, livestock handling safety, farm structure safety, farm and rural injury prevention, emergency and disaster preparedness, ATV, bicycle and lawnmower safety, chainsaw safety, logging safety and child and senior safety.Specific national programs offered include FARMEDIC, First-on-the-Scene and Tractor and Machinery Certification. University farm employees are provided full OSHA and regulatory training in addition to farm health and safety training.Also coordinates programs with other state and county extension faculty. Program planning conducted in cooperation with West Virginia Farm Bureau. A jointly organized farm safety and health conference is held annually.Research is conducted on various agricultural and rural safety topics. Current and past areas of research include PTO entanglements, personal protective equipment and pesticide safety, tractor and machinery certification, livestock handling and program evaluation.
