Jesseman Wins Championship, Tedesco Earns First 125cc Supercross Victory
PONTIAC, Mich. (April 5, 2003) - Yamaha's Chad Reed, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., won his third consecutive THQ World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series race of the season at the Pontiac Silverdome. Suzuki's Branden Jesseman, of Fombell, Pa., captured the 125cc Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Series championship, as Team Yamaha's Ivan Tedesco, of Albuquerque, N.M., won his first 125cc Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Series race.
Suzuki's Sean Hamblin earned the $1,500 SXGP.com holeshot award in the 250cc action, but was quickly passed by Reed for the lead. Carmichael started in seventh place and moved into second place by lap five.
Carmichael was 4.8 seconds behind Reed on lap 10 but couldn't make the pass. Carmichael finished second and Ernesto Fonseca was third. The win marked Reed's sixth on the season.
"He (Reed) handed it to me," said Carmichael. I had a bad start and couldn't reel him in. I need to go back home this week and put in some more work."
"I tried to control the race," said Reed. "I knew where he was the whole time, and when he started to catch me, I turned it up. He (Carmichael) trains hard and that keeps me motivated. To beat Ricky Carmichael for 20 laps is the greatest feeling."
Yamaha's Tiger Lacey, of Wolf Creek, Ore., earned the $1,000 SXGP.com holeshot in the 125cc class with Brock Sellards, of Sherrodsville, Ohio, and Tedesco in tow. One turn later, they passed Lacey and led the field for the next eight laps when Tedesco moved into the lead. Series points leader Branden Jesseman, who needed to finish eighth of better to win the championship, started in the back of the pack.
On lap five Jesseman went down, dropping to 16th place. While riding in second place, Sellards went down in the whoops and collected Brown in the crash as well. The crash erased all championship hopes for Brown. KTM's Brett Metcalfe crashed on the white-flag lap while in second place. Jesseman worked his way into sixth place, securing enough points to secure the championship. Tedesco won his first 125cc Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Series race, with Kelly Smith in second and Brown in third.
"I have been waiting for this for a while," said Tedesco of his fist supercross win. "I am glad to finally get this over with - it's been too long."
"I have been working so hard for this," said Jesseman while holding back tears. "I was so nervous out there but it worked out in the end. I am so happy about this."
Action heads to Dallas' Texas Stadium next weekend.
The final round of THQ World Supercross/AMA Supercross Series in Las Vegas will air on ABC's Wide World of Sports on Sunday, May 4, at 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST/3:00-4:00 p.m. PST
