This was Yamaha's first production snowmobile. It was developed as the third product line to use Yamaha's small-engine expertise after motorcycles and outboard motors. It was the benefactor of much of Yamaha's accumulated motorcycle technology and know-how down to the finest details, even directly mounting the YD-3 motorcycle engine in its performance tests. In North America this model became popular as a sport/leisure model while in Japan it was used primarily for transport.
