Description: The Colorado Environmental Coalition seeks a motivated intern to assist with research on issues pertinent to CEC’s work to protect wild lands and quality of life in Colorado. Specifically, much of the research will relate to issues such as energy development, grazing, and recreation/travel management in areas included in the Citizens?Wilderness Proposal to protect some of Colorado’s least known and least protected wild lands.

Specific tasks for this position will be determined by current needs and, to some degree, particular interests of the intern.

This position presents an excellent opportunity to learn about public lands issues, federal land agencies and environmental law, and how these relate to grass-roots activism and advocacy. Intern will work closely with Western Slope Field Director to formulate specific project goals and work plan.

Research will be accomplished via telephone interviews, Internet, and site visits. Some travel is required. Interns will be encouraged to visit proposed wilderness areas, and roadless lands as possible.

Some specific issues an intern in 2002 will be working on include:

Energy development

How does the Citizens?Wilderness Proposal specifically, and roadless area protection generally, affect potential leased and unleased federal lands?

What percent of a given resource area are leased, or available for leasing?

How well have current and past leases/development complied with stipulations (reclamation complete? Have stipulations routinely been waived?)?

What environmental issues are present “on-the-ground?because of gas development?

Grazing

What allotments and permits are up for renewal in 2002?

What are the histories of these allotments?

What is the situation “on-the-ground?

Recreation/Travel Management

What are the “Hot Areas?in the resource area or district?

What travel management plans are being contemplated for the Resource Area in the next two years?

Which areas in the Citizens?Wilderness Proposal are contentious for: Off-road Vehicles? Mountain Bikes?

What levels of use do they see?

What are the active recreation-user groups in the Resource Area?
