Gov. Ridge releases nearly $13.6 million to improve Pennsylvania tourist attractions

Gov. Tom Ridge recently released nearly $13.6 million in capital budget funds to design and construct improvements to several tourist attractions throughout the Commonwealth. Included in the announcement were several key Project Stewardship projects in state parks.

"Tourism is Pennsylvania's second-leading industry," Gov. Ridge said. "These capital funds will bolster key components of our tourism infrastructure."

Delaware Canal State Park in Bucks County will receive $2.4 million for year-one projects under the five-year improvement plan unveiled July 31. The funding will go toward the first phase of a resurfacing project to make the towpath suitable as a bike trail - 23 miles from Uhlerstown to Morrisville. The funds will also be used to construct comfort facilities at the Roosevelt and Forest Picnic areas near the Mule Boat Landing; to provide canoe portage at Durham and Narrows Picnic areas; and to provide a new water supply system at New Hope. Gov. Ridge also approved an additional $1 million to dredge the lower portion of the canal to restore and maintain the water level in the canal.

Presque Isle State Park in Erie County was allotted $1.2 million for improvements to the marina. Renovations will include replacement of main docks on piers 1 through 7, and to provide utilities at selected piers. The piers will be redesigned with finger piers and will accommodate demand for larger berths.

Also receiving capital budget funds is Lyman Run State Park in Potter County for rehabilitations to Lyman Run Dam. The improvements are important to the continued recreational use of the impoundment area behind the dam and to act as a flood control measure by controlling flows to downstream residential areas, such as Galeton. The $1.2 million project will incorporate a new spillway; rehabilitation of a control tower and new access bridge; slope protection for the upstream face of the dam; and concrete repairs to the outlet conduits.

In addition to state park improvements, capital budget funds were released for new PennDOT welcome centers in Adams, Erie, and Susquehanna counties and restoration of a building at Cornwall Iron Furnace in Lebanon County.
