* An operator of a motorized bicycle must have a valid driver's license or minor driver's license. No motorized bicycle shall be operated on any sidewalk, unless such operation is specifically designated. Motorized bicycles may be operated upon roadways, and in bicycle lanes included within such roadways.

** Motorized bicycles shall be registered with the State, and the decal will be affixed to the motorized bicycle frame in a conspicuous place. Many dealers who sell motorized bikes also can register them. Registration is valid for three years, and the fee for such registration is five dollars. Retail sellers of motorized bicycles retain one dollar from each fee. Every motorized bicycle shall have an identification number stamped on its frame which shall be recorded upon registration.

*** Off-highway vehicles used strictly on private property do not need to be registered. Off-highway vehicles driven in the State on public land must be registered. Off-highway vehicle agents, including dealers and licensing agents serving as such for the Division of Wildlife are authorized to assign identification numbers and register off-highway vehicles.

% Wheelchairs and motorized wheelchairs are not considered vehicles. People in wheelchairs or motorized wheelchairs are considered pedestrians.

Every motorized bicycle used between dusk and sunrise and times when people and vehicles are not clearly seen will be equipped with a lamp on the front, which has a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear, which is visible from all distances from fifty feet to three hundred feet to the rear when directly in front of a motor vehicle. A red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector. All motorized bicycle will have a bell or other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least one hundred feet; except that a motorized bicycle shall not have a siren or whistle.

Motor scooters over 50cc will normally have the cc number displayed on the vehicle.

When riding a vehicle on the sidewalk you must yield to any pedestrian. You cannot ride a bicycle, skateboard, roller skates or similar device on the sidewalk in the downtown area. This area is bordered on the north by Boulder St, on the south by Vermijo Av., on the east by Weber St. and on the west by Cascade Av. You cannot ride the above vehicles on or within Colorado Av. bordered on the east by 24th St. and on the west by 27th St. When prohibited by authorized signs, you cannot ride these vehicles on any sidewalk.

Safety Rules
Your safety is our concern so please follow these safety rules:
1. Wear an approved helmet at all times. Eye protection is also encouraged.
2. Avoid large hills. This may overheat the motor.
3. Avoid curbs, cobblestones, grates, and other rough or discontinuous surfaces.
4. Never ride with more than one person on a scooter.
5. Never ride your scooter at dusk or at night without appropriate lights.
6. Before each use, verify that there are no loose or missing parts, and that the brakes are working properly.
7. Don't ride in wet or icy conditions.
8. Don't stunt ride.
9. Ride in control at all times.
10. Never tie or hold your dog leash as you ride your bike or scooter while still connected with your pet.
Parents or other responsible adults should supervise younger children on any scooter.
Everyone who operates a vehicle on the roadway must obey the rules of the road. The Colorado State Driver Handbook is a good resource for understanding these rules. This handbook is available at all Drivers License Bureaus and on line at http://www.mv.state.co.us/
Warnings:
* Scooters are wheeled vehicles. Like bicycling, skateboarding, and in-line skating, riding a scooter can be dangerous even under the best of circumstances. Serious injury or even death is possible.
* Always wear an ANSI or Snell approved helmet when riding your scooter. Always keep the chinstrap securely buckled. Failure to wear an approved helmet may result in serious injury or death.
* Wet weather impairs traction, braking, and visibility. The risk of accident is dramatically increased in wet conditions.
* Riding at dusk, after dark, or at times of poor visibility is dangerous and can result in serious injury or death.
* Failure to properly tighten the handlebar quick-release lever may compromise steering action, which could cause you to lose control and fall. Falling can cause serious injury or even death. Push up and down on the handlebar to make sure that the lever is tight.

Keep a copy of the identifying paperwork for your motorized vehicle with the vehicle. That way, if there is any question as to what classification of vehicle is you will have the supporting paperwork.
