Freestyle Scooter
released:2000
Games Wiz rates it: 3/5
Freestyle Scooter comes from the makers of the mildly successful
skateboard-stacker - Grind Sessions, so no prizes for guessing there's
notable similarities. While not quite up the to brilliance of the Tony
Hawk series, there's still plenty on offer for fans of this
pseudo 'sport'.
As the title suggests, this game is all about how nimble players are at
the helm of a 'razor' style scooter. In game action is the typical mix
of obstacle laden levels filled with all manor of ramps, jumps and half
pipes for performing humanly impossible tricks and combos on. Egged on
via a somewhat wafer thin storyline, players are set the task of
rescuing some scooter buddies from a cranky computer (whatever!), which
essentially boils down to completing a variety of objectives per level,
such as earning trick points, collecting scattered scooter wheels,
finding objects and taking on timed challenges. Players are rewarded
with game extras unlocking bonus characters and locations.
Graphically, the game treads familiar ground as Grind Sessions,
offering a decent frame rate at the expense of occasional blocky
images. The handling and controls make it a pinch to pick and play for
most first timers, which is perhaps why the game is geared toward
younger players. Particularly the use of cartoon-like characters with
oversized heads and trendy clothes. The music is what you'd expect from
any typical extreme sports game: a mix of Californian punk rock noise.
Those still nursing gravel rash from the likes of the Tony Hawk series,
could well find relief in the easier game play, not to mention the
budget pricing.
