Customer Reviews:- The Rosetta Stone for the stock market
For me, the book's immediate value is twofold:
First, it decipheres the concepts and language of a confusing subject into plain English.
Second, it provides quick and thorough information on where to go for research, how to buy responsibly, and how to remain confident when everyone else isn't.
In addition, Kelly crysatilizes and distilles the stratagies of pros like Warren Buffett and Benjamin Graham into his own formidable two-pronged approach. On the one side is a permanant portfolio that has soundly beaten the DOW time and time again. On the other is a more exploratory method; there is higher risk and reward here but he shows you how to properly look before you leap. The first one keeps you safe while the second looks out for new opportunities. Simple, right?
The bottom line is that this book gave me the confidence to enter the stock market myself. If Mr. Kelly's guidance pays off I will be back to give him the full five-star review....more info - The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing
This is a great guide that enables the reader to gather information and enter the complex world of investing in an intelligent, precise manner. The book takes you step by step and introduces strategies to create a permanent portfolio that all investors should possess before one ventures into the more volatile world of individual stock investing. I especially appreciated the blueprint Mr. Kelly has devised for the investor to research companies and compare 20 individual stocks for eventual analysis of data, and purchase of stocks. He adds humor and wit and has created an enjoyable, informative guide for the investor. I highly recommend this guide....more info - The most valuable book i've ever read
While reading this book, it became very obvious that I was investing my money the wrong way. The investing mistakes discussed were exactly the things I was doing wrong.
I now have a CLEAR understanding of how to determine what stocks to buy and when. Seriously, DO NOT buy another stock without reading this book first....more info - Fantasic book for anyone trying to build wealth!
As a novice investor, I picked up this book hoping to gain some overall knowledge of the stock market. I was amazed at how brilliantly written it was and I can't wait to read it again! I have read several other publications up to this point, but most were packed with nothing but mumbo jumbo technical terms that will make anyone go to sleep within seconds! Jason makes the market easy to understand, exciting, and even incorporates some comedic tone throughout the book. Although this book is targeted at novices, I feel that by the end of the book he has taught several advanced expert level strategies that will ensure wealth down the road for anyone who follows them diligently. Also, he is truly a genuine man, not trying to convince the world that you can become a millionaire overnight, but instead focusing on the time tested formulas and strategies that will give an investor the lowest chance of loss and the maximum chance of gain. I got the feeling that Jason is more likely to expose the truth about the market in a truthful way than to spurt some "get rick quick" hype just to make another sale at someone else's loss (like many of the famous "gurus" do). Anyone who reads this book and understands basic algebra could learn the tricks of the pros-- and more importantly, learn how to incorporate that type of thinking into your own personality so you can actually think like the pros do! I have already subscribed to his monthly newsletter (which is a phenomenal deal) and can't wait to give my investment portfolio a total makeover!
Thank you so much Jason, I can't express enough how grateful I am to have found your book. I am looking forward to writing back to you after I make my first million, which after reading this book I have realized I am able to make happen a lot sooner than I thought! ...more info - Great Jump Start Down Investment Road!
I went from knowing very little about the stock market to having a great jump start at answering a lot of questions. He dives into the strategies of some of the best investors. Describes the basics, growth vs. value, lots of stock investment resources. I would suggest this book to any stock investment beginner. There wasn't one page that I had read that left me wondering what I had just read....more info - Good book on Investing
Excellent for beginners. But it does not provide in details how to read financial reports and detect frauds. Along with this author needs to add detailed calculations of real life examples by comparing two well known financial results (e.g. Mcdonald vs burgerking or coke vs pepsi)...more info - GREAT
The best intro to stock market investing book around. Very easy to understand as well as very well written. Kelly knows how to keep the reader interested! I would highly recommend this book to anyone is getting into investing or thinking about getting into it!...more info - excellent book for beginning stock investor
This is the second investing book that I've actually read. I've purchased many. I actually read The Millionaire Next Door and this one.
This book was simple, easy to follow and easy to understand. I read it in two days while traveling, and I'm going to return to it over and over again as I venture on into the world of investing.
I also ordered Jason's Mutual Fund guide as I am always overwhelmed with decisions when picking investments for my 401k.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't know much about stock investing, wants to seek larger returns and is overwhelmed by all the information out there.
Jason cuts to the chase, speaks to both kinds of investors (value/growth), introduces you to the masters, then synthesizes in a way that actually make sense.
I'm impressed, Thanks!
...more info - Great 1st Book for the Beginner Investor
First, I would like to start off by explaining that I am a complete newbie when it comes to investing. I am an engineer by trade, and this is the first book I read in my quest to educate myself in the art of investing. I don't have the ability to comment on the effectiveness of Mr. Kelly's actual investment strategies that he explains in his book.
However, with that said, I am a very big fan of the book. I believe Jason Kelly is actually an English Major, and you can see that in his writing style. This book was very easy to read, and I was able to finish it very quickly. I was surprised at how easily I was able to stay up late reading a book about (*yawn*) investing.
Also, his primer on stock/financial terms is great. Throughout the book, he explains a lot of the terminology involved with analyzing and picking stocks. Obviously, for a newbie, this was invaluable. His sections on the "Master Investors" provides a great initial view of some of the great financial minds. It is nice to be able get a quick overview of their books and ideas without having to read the actual 300+ page books by each one. If you are then hooked on the idea of investing, you can spend the time to read them more in depth and form your own opinions.
Finally, Mr. Kelly outlines a basic strategy based on the beliefs from those Master Investors. Once again, I can not comment on the effectiveness of this strategy, but I liked it's simplicity and ability to automate it. Although I am a very cynical person, I look forward to trying out his strategy for myself. However, I also plan on reading more books to compare them to what he lays out in this book.
Bottom-line, if you are just getting into investing and need a place to start, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It will keep you interested while you try to learn all the basics about stock market investing, and it provides a nice foundation of ideas from a wide-variety of investors. Maybe his strategy works great, maybe it doesn't, but it seems like an easy way to start to get your feet wet. Two ideas that Mr. Kelly mentions in his book (and I think they are applicable here) is that no one cares more about your money than you do, and you shouldn't let emotions control your decisions when it comes to stock market investing. In other words, it's up to you to evaluate the merits of his ideas through your own research. In the world of investing, I am sure most "experts" disagree on the right way to do it, but I greatly appreciate Mr. Kelly taking the time to explain the basics of investing, the ideas of some of his peers, and his ideas in a book that was a pleasure to read....more info - Good Book
This book is good for people who are not familiar with the stock market and the terminology behind it....more info - Good starter guide
this was a good book to get your feet wet in the world of investing....more info - Investor's fundamental guide
I do my own personal investing in the stock market both in the Philippines and U.S. and I find this book incredibly helpful on the area of fundamental analysis namely the P/E and P/BV ratios, EPS and many others. Although the book is lacking in the technical analysis which is the real intention of the book as stated, it has done a great deal of helping me save possible losses in the chaotic times of the year 2008 when every single stock was tumbling down, by coming up with ideas and guidelines that made me decide putting up most of my money in the sidelines. At the worst, my portfolio has just diminished by an estimated 8% only as compared to the averaged portfolio losses of 40%.
The book reminded me to focus more on the financial aspects of the company namely --
Cash Position - To have sufficient cash to pass thru the crisis.
The higher the cash ratio, the better.
Debt to Equity ratio - The fewer the debts the better. Companies
tend to weather the storm easily if they have less
burdens.
Profitability - Consistent progressive earnings thru the years
coupled with new innovations to sustain that growth.
Current Ratio, Payout ratio, Capital Investments ...
The wisdom from the famous investors mentioned in the book such as the great Buffett, Peter Lynch, O'Neal and so forth, make me understand that to have a good grasp of the fundamentals means a much better sound investment, which would eventually reap good profits through time.

I just finished reading this book for the second time and I can't say enough about it. It walks you through systematically from having no investing knowledge to a solid foundation built on a structured plan of action based on research, not emotion.
Jason takes advice from the masters of investing and ties it into a very workable strategy.
Get this book, you won't be dissappointed....more info - Accurate title...

The book title is the best way to describe the book content; a rare phenomenone though. Rrecommended, to put you on track for stock investing.
...more info - excellent basic guide
Sadly, I haven't had time to actually do everything he tells you to analyze stocks, but I have never understood the stock market and how to rate or make informed decisions on buying a stock before. Basic, straight-forward and very understandable. Excellent book. Wish more financial books were like this one....more info - Extremely Useful!
I bought this book to start learning stock market investing. I had read other books or should I say I have tried to read other books. This is a very easy book to read and understand. I bought a few more for members of my family for part of their Christmas presents one year. Investing does not need to be rocket science and with all the resources on the web now, with some knowledge from this book and resources out there for free. It is a great investment.
http://www.sheboomers.com/...more info - Decent book
I think this book is better for an educational purpose of the basics in stocks than a book to help invest. As you might see, by reading the chapter on the experts that one expert says buy low and sell high and another says buying high may be better. There is a lot of info that contradicts other info.
In other words, buying stocks is not a good plan and buying good low cost mutual funds by vanguard, or Dfa if you can afford Dfa are no brainer ways to invest. So while we do not want to hear this go grab "smart money" by Jane Bryant Quinn or "The boggleheads guide to investment strategy" you will be glad you did. As for the stock pickers its time to say goodbye to this hard worked and not very fruitful endevour. ...more info - Great fundamentals to gain confidence in your portfolio
Before I bought this book, I was investing in various different stocks and ETFs I heard about from other people. I heard about the whole 10-11% historic return of the S&P 500 and put most of my money into SPY. I also took some advice from the so called pundits and ended up losing a bit of money from that. I didn't have much of a strategy other than buying index funds and stocks that other people told me would be great buys.
That has changed after reading this book.
In the beginning, Jason defines a lot of stock market terms that I was already mostly familiar with so that was review material.
Then he goes over the strategies of history's most successful investors, and that was quite interesting. They share a lot of common strategies, and it's good to know that there's no magic bullet. Good portfolios are built off solid fundamentals and investing in all around money making companies.
The most helpful part of the book was the section on building the list of stocks that make up your watch list. I pulled up a spreadsheet and entered in all the stocks I thought were strong along with a few I heard from other people and by looking at the numbers, I could see that some stocks were obviously better than others. I now have facts for choosing what to invest in rather than trusting what other people say. In addition, I've made some stock choices recently that have paid off because these companies continue to report solid growth and earnings.
I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have an investing strategy. For anyone who feels lost in the wild fluctuations of the market, this book will give you a solid foundation for building a strong portfolio that you'll be proud to own....more info - Great little hidden gem for investing.
I bought this book after reading some recommendations around the net, the price was certainly attractive. Not knowing what you are going to get, I don't often like to spend $50+ on some of the investment books that are out there.
I've done some trading in the past and was looking for information on shorting stocks (since in the current market everything is going down). The book covered the concept in brief, which did answer my questions about how shorting works.
It is quite an easy read, and is not weighted down technical mumble jumbo.
I was excited by some of the examples in the book, particularly the way the author clearly explains the work done by O'Shaughessy and his analysis of historical stock performance. When placed out clearly in a chart it is simply amazing to see the difference a couple of % can make when compounded over a number of years. The difference is millions of dollars!
For the price of the book, you can't go wrong with this one. If you are trying to calculate the return on investment, the $10 spent on this book should return dividends for years to come!...more info - The Most Make Sense Stock Investing Guide
Jason has made this book as simple as possible and yet deep enough to get your cold feet cured. This book explain key points from the fundamental as well as technical approach in the stock market. And he always uses common sense when giving his reasons why his system will work or at the very least, will help preserve your money.
Jason system tends to be a bit fundamentalist when screening the stocks before finally he put them in his list. And he is Bill Miller technical twin when it is time to buy or sale the stock. From my rookie point of view, Jason is one of the best authors....more info - Excellent Book
I have read (or attempted to read) many personal finance books and I have to rate this book as probably the best book in terms of simplicity, knowledge and advice. I really enjoyed and learned a lot from this book alone. Mr. Kelly describes in simple terms the investment methods of the masters - Buffet, Graham, Fischer, Miller and O'Neal. His investment strategies in the book are also simple to follow even for a novice. You cannot find any other book in finance like this one. And best of all, it is also extremely reasonably priced. ...more info - Great Book! Gets to the points quickly.
Jason does a great job of giving the 30,000 foot view of the stock market. He covers what has worked, what hasn't and what legendary investors use. He explains some of the common strategies (eg Dow Dividend Strategy). He also summaries similarities between those legendary investors.
This is a very easy book to read, with lots of information and worth every penny. I highly recommend it. A great intro to investing book!

If you want a bit of everything about stock market, this book is for you. If you are a beginner and want a more concise guide on how to evaluate a company and make your stock purchases, I would recommend any of Peter Lynch's books over this one. I'm a beginner. So I disagree with a lot of reviewers claiming that you would pick this book up as your starting point. It's no fun to read. That's one big turn off for me.....more info - Ding- Ding...Here's a Winner !!!
I read a lot of books, but I seem to only write reviews/comments on the super good one's or the time-n-money waster's. This book is a 5 star and nothing less. My new high-liter is about dry because I went crazy marking everything that I thought would be valuable to reference later on. Basic? Yes, this book is very basic and gives basic info and ideas. But sometimes it's good to go back to the basics to recheck and make sure you're headed in the direction that you intended to go in the first place. It's easy to get side-tracked and even lost at times in this insane market. Jason Kelly knows what he's talking about and with his simple permanent portfolio suggestions, you'll finally be able to keep a cool head when others panic; and they panic every day, win or lose. With his simple "long-term" strategy you'll still be able to trade on the side if that suits your fancy. But with the knowledge gained in this book you'll more likely have a better chance at picking winners yourself instead of relying on the media to tell you what the hottest thing on the street is, and by then you're already too late.

Very good insights and explanations, I also enjoyed the section with the different strategies used by well known investors and analysts....more info - Quick Overview Of Investing Information
This is a great little book for a beginning investor. I've purchased it for friends who've expressed an interest in learning about the process. It gives all the basics so that a person can further explore areas and methods of investing that fit their personal requirements from investments.
It is not comprehensive. For instance, it doesn't talk about GARP (Growth at a Reasonable Price) methods. If it were it would be a much larger and more complex book, however. It serves its purpose quite well and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get started in investing with stocks. ...more info - Buy this Book.
This should be the first book you read if you want to invest in stocks. It's excellent. You can add to your library later, but this book gives a strong and clear overview of how everything works, strategic approaches, mistakes to avoid, and other books and sites for further education. And the autor is easy to read and funny. Buy!

For a person with no background in the stock market this book provides good novice explainations. However, the latter chapters are riddled with the authors self promotion, and recommendation of several ETFs rather than individual stocks. The MidCap ETFs spoken so highly of in the book with great returns (charts included) did not perform anywhere near as good as stated. In fact the the two ETFs the book champions would have earned a mere 4% over the last 5 years. You can get better performance from a bank savings account....more info - The Investment Book I Must Have.
