Customer Reviews:- great for avation work
this compact screw gun/drill is great for working on helicopters and small aircraft as it gets in to manny small places the average air screwgun or or air drill motor cant go due to the air hose attached to it as for any thing else it maybe use for i dont know as i work in the avation industry ...more info - Can't use ordinary drill bits!
This would be the best compact lithium drill on the market except for one thing: IT CAN'T USE STANDARD DRILL BITS. Instead, you have to buy special bits that aren't cheap. OK, you're on the jobsite and you need to drill a hole. You have the right size bit, but wait! This drill only takes special bits! Don't have the one you need? You either have to drive to the hardware store and pay through the nose, or you're SOL.
The clueless marketing exec who made the decision to go with this worthless chuck design ought to be downsized....more info - Great Little Driver
I have used this driver several times. I install closet shelving, and have used it to drive 200 #8x2" wood screws with a very aggressive thread, through 1/2" drywall, into 2x4 studs, without switching batteries!
Pros: Battery lasts! Compact and light. Strong torque. Clutch works great. No "chuck" to spin against your work, and scratch it up. Battery indicator is great. Spare battery is small enough to keep in your tool belt without weighing you down. Charges quickly.
Cons: I'm left-handed, and it's very easy to switch the forward/reverse switch. I pull the trigger with my middle finger. It's very comfortable that way. The light is powerful, but a little annoying sometimes. You have to use a special holder for a drill bit IF you want to drill. But, this isn't a drill, it's a driver. The RPM's are a little slow, but I imagine to get more RPM's you either gain size or weight.
This has taken the place of my 18V drill/driver for driving screws. I still use the 18V to drill, but switching to this for driving sure has helped my shoulder. 200 screws without charging! That's pretty amazing to me.
...more info - I feel sorry for Milwaukee
I feel sorry for Milwaukee . They have made a tough sub compact DRIVER that is super powerful , packed with features , fits your hand like a dream , and is small enough to drop into the pockets in your tool belt . Yet they get complaints because it does not drill well . It's a " DRIVER " not a driller folks . The handle is a 1/4 " this way or that . I was hoping it came in blue etc. etc. I for one thank Milwaukee for once again making a tool that's clearly tougher than some of the guys using them . Thirty plus years on the job thanks Milwaukee .........more info - My New Fave tool - easy on my arthritis, too
I love this new tool. It is lightweight, can get into tight spaces, and still drive a four inch screw like the big boys (I have used Milwaukee tools for a decade). It has a battery life indicator, a little light that comes on, and just feels rights in my hand. Also, it is much easier on my arthritic hands and elbows - at 100lb torque it does most jobs, and without wrenching my hand. Now I use the 18V just for framing and so on.
It fits my pocket or gear-bag, and doesnt pull my pants down!! Now, if they could just make this cheaper! But hey, it's a man's tool, not a toy, despite the lightweight. Only one downside - it's made in China. ...more info - Very Nice, but wish it had a 2 speed gearbox (faster RPM for drilling)
I own the Milwaukee 2401 driver and have been using it daily. I have also used the Hitachi, Makita and Bosch 10.8 volt drivers. The Milwaukee is my overall favorite sub-compact driver, but the Makita and Hitachi have some enticing features that I wish were incorporated into the Milwaukee.
Hitachi's 10.8 Volt driver uses a light ring as the clutch face which allows the entire work area around the bit to be illuminated as opposed to simply having a LED above the trigger (below the clutch) which only illuminates the lower work area below the bit. The Hitachi also free stands upright on the base of its battery like many of the larger cordless power drills & impact drivers. Standing upright is nice and convenient, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.
Makita's 10.8 Volt driver has a 2 speed gear box which allows speeds of 0-350 RPM and 0-1,300 RPM. When set to the low speed (0-350), the Makita produces 200 inch pounds of torque and it definitely out drives the Milwaukee (100 inch pounds of torque) in terms of power based on my own testing from driving 1/4 x 3.5" hex head screws. The Milwaukee would drive the hex head screws so the base of the head was flush with the wood, while the Makita (in low speed) would continue driving the head into and well below the surface. When the Makita was in High Speed, it would sometimes drive the screw ~70% to ~90% of the way at best, but it sure is nice to have that 2 speed gear box because it really does add versatility to this driver. And the other thing I really like about the Makita driver is that it leaves the LED illuminated for several seconds after removing your finger from the trigger.
One thing missing from these compact drivers is an extra bit holder. The other day I had to remove a couple dozen project boxes from a support rail, take them apart, remove the connected wiring, install strain reliefs, tighten the ground screws and put them back together while on a ladder. I had to switch between phillips, square drive and two different sizes of slotted bits for each project box. A spare bit holder would have been very convenient for this and other jobs I do where I have to frequently switch bits. My magnetic tray comes in handy for holding bits, screws, etc, but Milwaukee could have added a simple low profile spare bit holder into the top moulding for very little money and it surely would have been useful to many people besides myself. Even now, they could probably make a small 'optional' bracket to hold an extra bit or two that's simply secured by the two upper screws on top of the body just behind the clutch.
I still prefer the Milwaukee 2401 driver over the other models because of ergonomics (fits mys hand very well), the quick bit loading chuck, the battery fuel gauge, the smooth progressive trigger, the tool selection using this same battery, the 5 year tool warranty, its ease of use, etc. But this could be a better product if it incorporated the following features:
1) 'Light Ring' for better illumination all the way around the bit / work piece
2) Keep the LED's illuminated for several seconds after letting off the trigger
3) 2 speed gear box to improve torque for driving and a higher speed for drilling
4) Add a bit holder of some sort so we can keep different bits readily available on the tool.
5) Consider allowing future versions to stand upright if enough people think it's important to them. I'm happy with its current form factor....more info - Poor Little Battery
This is a well constructed toy, very handy and easy to use.
The battery cycle life is short due in part to the overall size, recharge time is great, that's good because you will be using that feature often.
I own both the Milwaukee 2401 & Makita 6935FD when I need a tool to get the job done, first time, every time, it's the Makita all the time. Having said that I like the Milwaukee & have no intention of sending it back, for home or small shop use it's great, for on the job use it falls short, if you're needs are not very demanding you will like this unit....more info - Great Tool and Price
I own a similar Sub-Compact Driver (Bosch) but the torque of Milwaukee 2401-22 is much better. For the price this is a good buy. Amazon is offering this at lot cheaper than at Home Depot. I will always check Amazon first before buying it at a local hardware store....more info - Great little drill/driver
The Milwaukee 2401-22 is a small, powerful, lightweight, well balanced drill/driver. It comes with 2 long-life batteries that charge in 30 minutes. Combined with a Milwaukee drill chuck, its everything this homeowner needs for home projects. I used it on 3 inch deck screws on a shelving project. A friend who is a professional remodeler uses one for all his lighter duty work. I may buy some of these for Christmas presents!...more info - DesertDogReview
This is an amazing tool! It's compact size enables it to be used in spaces otherwise too small for a hand held drill. Having it available for use in cabinet making is a real treat. The Li-ion battery has a capacity that exceeds the typical power pack - I have yet to exhaust the total charge during a day's use. The "bit holder collar" makes changing bits and drivers very convenient. GREAT VALUE!...more info - Very pleased so far
I have only had my driver for about a month, but have used it on several jobs. I was extremely pleased with the compact size and have been pleasantly surprised with the power and battery life of this driver. I also own a Milwaukee 18V hammer drill which has performed extremely well for me. This lightweight driver seems to offer the same great quality. I did some comparison shopping before buying from Amazon, and they had by far the best deal on this driver. I would certainly recommend this tool to others. ...more info - A+++ Best compact on the market!
I purchased 3 of these for my elevator installation business about 1 1/2 years ago. This drill drives screws! It is made to work with all day every day. Great power, fast charge time. So happy, I just ordered 1 more today. Fit's right in a mechanics tool bag, add a set of drill bits and screw tips, and your good to go. I would recommend this to anybody in any type of repair business. Great product....more info - Awesome tool
Powerful enough to drive and drill. Battery life is good and the batteries charge quickly. I thought the light was a little much, but wouldn't you know, I have used it. ...more info - Great cordless screwdriver
This is a very convenient tool. Powerful, but light. Battery lasts a VERY long time. The only problem I have is with the adjustable torque. You would think that going from a "10" to an "11" on the adjustment would be a small increment, but it acts like you're in "drill" mode. At the price paid, I would have expected a hard case instead of the cloth one
Otherwise, I would purchase again!
...more info - Perfect for Contractor or Homeowner
I bought as a second screwgun. Great for getting into tight spots when Im installing cabinets. Has a lot of power and batteries last. Only drawback is it wont take a regular drill bit, but I knew that before I bought it. Worth the money. ...more info - Little Power House
I own many electric drills and screwdrivers but none were suited for tight spaces. I then came across this small Milwaukee unit and looked it over. It appeared to be just what I was looking for, so I decided to give it a try. Milwaukee was a brand name high on my satisfaction list as I have many other Milwaukee power tools and been very happy with them. Buying this little 'powerhouse' was certainly not disappointing. It more than lived up to Milwaukee standards. It performs almost as well as my 19.2 volt Hitachi, a combo drill/driver that is almost twice as big and and has a huge battery - most cumbersome. I highly recommend this compact, powerful unit. It has become my favorite portable power drill/driver (I own three different size battery operated units) ....more info - Great Screw Driver
I replaced my DeWalt 7v screwdriver with this. The Dewalt had a lot going for it. But this is better, with one BIG exception- No place to hold a second bit; hence the 4stars. So you have to carry a bit box all the time. But the Li-Ion battery is incredible!!! It has not lost ANY voltage sitting on the shelf for a couple of months. My NiCads are always dead. Its ONLY Li-Ion from here on out. I don't use my tools weekly; but when I need them I need them now. Its nice to know the screwdriver will have held its charge. So good that I only need one battery and I have stored the second battery at half charge(as recommended) for when the first one dies. ...more info - compact drill
This product was all that I expected it to be. Very happy with it....more info - Great pocket driver
Handy, lightweight compact, powerful and it has a light that tells you how much charge is left. I drywalled 2 bathrooms (5' x8') including the ceiling on 1 charge. I do alot of building and it has all but replaced my DeWalt drills....more info - Powerful, light weight, perfect size!
I am an IT professional and needed to replace an aging Dewalt power screwdriver.
We had a TV die in our office and a technician showed up to fix it... Almost all new lcd/plasma panels have tons of screws to remove the back cover. He brought this little beauty with him and let us feel it and test it out.
I bought one 30 minutes after he left.
The grip is great, it feels good to hold and is not HEAVY like a traditional drill. It is even lighter then our dewalt screwdriver.
It comes with 2 batteries (a bonus) and a canvas tote....not to mention the charger. It has a LED light that aims up to the screw...awesome...but not really helpful in an IT scenario.
Overall - I cant believe I havent seen this thing before. The build quality and the value are amazing.
ps. Get your self a long (10-12") phillips bit if you want to dig inside a computer. :-)

I had to write a review for this drill. I love tools and work with them all day every day and this is the best tool I've bought in years. I wouldn't try to build a large, heavy project with this, but I've been amazed at its' power and battery life when I've pushed it farther than I thought I should. I've become so accustomed to having a light, compact drill in my hand that I use it more and more and hardly ever have to switch up to a larger drill. I drove 2 1/2" #14's into teak with this drill and the battery was still showing full charge after ten of them. When I use it for small screws and light jobs, it seems to last for weeks and the batteries don't self-discharge because they're lithium-ion, so I can keep it in my truck and not have to worry about the batteries being dead when I take it out even if it's been a while. The construction of the drill feels solid and of high quality - lots of metal - very unlike most of the tools I'm used to buying these days. Do yourself a favor and buy the Milwaukee Quik-Lok 38 piece bit set with this. It fits perfectly in the compact carry bag that comes with the drill where the charger would go. With that, you almost always have everything you need, although I also bought a hex-shank 3/8" chuck to keep in the bag as well, because I knew I would want to use regular drill bits from time to time, which I do - countersinks, mostly. I think if I could only have one cordless drill, I'd have this one and use a corded drill for the toughest jobs, which are often more appropriate anyway. ...more info - Excellent Tool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a contractor. I purchased this tool about a month ago. I LOVE IT! It is well designed and built. The light is handy. The chuck is extremely easy to use. The battery meter is great and the tool has excellent power and battery life. Simply put " This is an excellent tool and I wouldn't change a thing about it!" Great job Milwaukee!!!!!!!!!...more info - Love it.
I picked up this driver/drill back in June. I've used it mostly for building and installing cabinets. It's been perfect. I can quickly drill and drive accurately and with out the weight of standard drill. It's so small and it amazes me how powerful it is. My friend let me borrow his Ryobi cordless drill and it just didn't have power so I was very reluctant to go cordless but I'm so glad I did with this driver!
I've also done some drilling into concrete sub floor to install transition strips and it's worked great. It's not as good as a hammer drill but I put it through the paces and it stood up quite well. It has plenty of power and battery life. Oh the work light and battery indicator are both very nice features. I think most everything like cell phones all need flash lights on them... Anyway I would highly recommend picking up this impact driver/drill.
...more info - New Model?
I just got this drill in after taking back the Makita set I had been using for a few months. After using my buddies 2401 for a few weeks I decided I had to have one. First off I love the chuck its fast and has zero wobble. Second I dont think I will ever buy another tool without a battery indicator again, I love this. Third is feels better in my hand. Fourth to be honest it just plain looks nicer then the Makita. There are 2 things that i do miss from the Makita. First is the 2 speed option that is a big deal if you want to use it for drilling in which case I do but to be honest I rarely need more then 500 rps for anything I do. Even when going into wood I prefer not to use the faster speed in order to keep better control of depth. Second is the light delay which isnt too big of a deal but something i wish this drill had. Also on a side note I am not sure if this is a new model but on the box I received the Torque rating says 150 in lbs not 100 I am assuming this was recently changed. To be honest I cant tell the difference in torque comparing the makita to this drill. ...more info - BEST THING I'VE BOUGHT IN YEARS!!!
This is the best product i have purchased in years. Small and compact, yet,, enough TORQUE to twist out of my hands. I can't say enough. This thing is AWESOME!!...more info - Super Handy
I have had the Milwaukee 28V set of tools for a few years now. Only thing I was facing was the sheer size of the drill sometimes forced me to use a 90deg gear head on occasion. Also the trigger is less sensitive on my 28V these days so I thought for the price this little driver would be a good thing.
Out of the box I could not remove the battery installed in the drill. After some coaxing it finally came out. The tang that holds the top of the battery on was protruding slightly. I shaved the edge of it with my pocket knife and all is well.
When first placing the the batteries on the charger they would indicated failed. I noticed if I held the battery in firmly it functioned okay. So I ever so slightly bent the three smaller contacts inward just a bit, not too much else they'd get smashed. Now it functions fine.
The form and function of this driver is great. And the solid Milwaukee build is why I cherish this brand so much. This is a great driver and I will continue to enjoy it....more info - Great product great price and works as described
Im a home appliance repair tech. I use this driver for small screw removal and occasional bolt removal no bigger than 5/16th. This driver is perfect for my job. The small light is the best feature and the bit holder is so simple to use. The first battery charge lasted me a week of work. The unit is light well balanced and rugged. I dont think the unit is under priced or over priced it is a really good value. This also has a 5 year warranty thats almost unbelievable. I paid $113.00 from Amazon shipping included. I highly reccomend this product if you do assembly or disasembly of items that have smaller screws. This item is not for a carpenter or wood worker or heavy duty iron work. And the battery also works with other Milwaukee tools. I cant wait to get the flashlight....more info - Great Tool
After looking around I think this tool is the best in class. I use it all the time around the house. I think battery life is great, and recharge time is very short. This is a great tool to have around the house....more info - Light, Fast, and Long Lasting!
I bought this sub compact to everyday installs. I use this every day! This drill is very light and powerful! I had a 18V drill prior, and that was way to heavy to hold up while doing installs. Nice led light, to keep work space nice and lit. Only bad part is hard to find hex drill bits. ...more info - Indulgent Impulse Buy at First, Now a Household Essential
Although I thought I'd made a questionable impulse buy, I wasn't surprised to discover it was a high quality tool out of the box (you only need to hold a Milwaukee tool to know they're well-made). As for whether I really needed it or had enough things to use it for, I've done at least two minor home improvement/repair projects that my fiancee never bugged me to do at this point so I think that speaks for itself.
Power?
First of all it does drill. If you thought it was going to drill fast, you had unreasonable expectations. It's not a 2 lb. replacement for the V28 drill or one of Milwaukee's corded wonders. With driving in mind, it has a low RPM rating even though it has enough torque to actually jerk your hand a touch. It's a good thing it has so many clutch settings because you can actually do damage with the little guy if you leave it on the drill setting and you're not careful driving with it. So yes, not fast but plenty of power. Read the manual for a rough idea of what to set the clutch at.
If you actually need to drill more than a handful of holes with it, get some high quality bits and Milwaukee's 1/4" hex to 3/8" drill chuck adapter. It still doesn't replace a heavier duty corded or cordless drill but it makes a world of difference in speed of drilling and drill bit options.
Battery
This is my first Li-Ion tool and I'm blown away. I've had it a couple weeks now and used it for 4-5 random home projects and some gratuitous drilling tests in some scrap wood. The battery currently in use holds its charge when inactive and hasn't dropped a light yet. The batteries recharged in about 30 minutes out of the box as advertised.
Hopefully the Hackzall chews through batteries at least four times faster than this drill because I'm planning on getting the kit for the impact driver rebate and I have no idea what I'm going to do with 4 batteries if it doesn't. Sell them on e-bay I guess :)
Quality/Design
It feels rock solid in my hand and all of the black stuff you see on the tool (including the top) is made from a black rubber grip material that makes the drill easy to handle. It feels good in your hand and the weight and balance of it is perfect.
The chuck is awesome. It locks shank bits in tight, has good stability, is very easy to use, has no identifiable wobble for me and it has just enough spring in it to actually eject hot bits if you want to but if the drill is angled up a smidge they won't fly out on you.
It makes excellent use of LEDs. Battery indicators are essential on Li-Ion tools since they give very little indication that they're about to run out of juice by losing power (manual says power will drop just long enough to finish a task while letting you know you need to replace the battery but I can't verify that yet - which is impressive, IMO).
Anybody who has ever had to get under a desk in a dimly lit cubicle farm won't need to ask whether the light was worth implementing. Great feature. I don't know what its critics are talking about. I have no problem finding screws in the dark with it.
Aesthetic
No practical-minded man wants to fess up to this but ugly tools... well, let's just say I'm glad Milwaukee, Bosch, and Makita all tend to outperform DeWalt so I could avoid feeling childish for having a dilemma that's not 100% performance-related. It almost looks like an atomic raygun from some forgotten '50s serial. I find that exceptionally cool and it probably adds more to the experience of using it than I'd like to admit but it would still be a winner if it was butt ugly.
Handle Size Issue
I have average, perhaps even smallish hands for 6'3 (or just a lot of large-handed medium height friends) and the grip is comfortable for me but if you have small hands, give it a test-drive at a hardware store with Milwaukee demo products first. I'm seeing positive reviews from a lot of women though so perhaps it's not really an issue. It's definitely wider than it looks in the pictures though which is why so many probably comment on it.
In fact, I suspect it's that width that keeps the placement of the direction switch from being an issue for most. I hit it by accident sometimes and saw a review from a self-proclaimed large-handed guy saying he had the same problem but enough to actually be a nuisance for him, whereas for me it's a minor issue that doesn't come up often.
Value
On the one hand, $100-130 still seems a bit much for the value-minded consumer who only needs something like it a few times a year. On the other, this is one of those tools you like so much, you start looking for crap to do with it. If you don't know what I mean by that, give this thing a whirl and you may suddenly remember a bunch of projects you've been putting off for a while or invent some new ones.
Also, the versatility you get out of a power tool that accepts hex bits could save you a lot of needlessly pricey purchases for one-time use items (just get the right bit instead for cheap) and it will eliminate the need to keep a wide variety of hand tools on hand. Hex to ratchet set adapters are available (I got a cheap one that covers three sizes) and I recommend Milwaukee's 3/8" hex to drill chuck adapter. If you have a crappy old 3/8" corded Black and Decker drill or equivalent around for drilling the occasional pilot hole, you can replace it with this tool.
And let's not forget Milwaukee's 5 year warranty. Not even Bosch, Milwaukee's biggest rival for quality, IMO, offers that on their power tools. The majority of negative Milwaukee reviews from people who had something go wrong with a tool rarely mention any attempt to actually talk to Milwaukee rather than Amazon for some reason.
Rebate (expires after 2008)
This is huge. Milwaukee has a tool rebate active until the end of the year. Get any two kits and you get the Impact driver for free. When it's sold as a standalone (no batteries or charger), I'm guessing the impact driver will be about 50 more bucks than this tool as a standalone. If like me, you're excited about the Hackzall, for about 90-100 bucks more than the drill/driver, impact driver, flashlight 3-tool combo kit, you get an extra charger, two more batteries and you replace the silly flashlight with a Hackzall which from the reviews I've seen is another lightweight wonder. You could sell the the extra batteries and charger and possibly pay less than you would for the combo kit. With the rebate in mind, consider this a six-star item.
Conclusion
You can't go wrong with this driver/drill as a gift and if you have even a spark of a DIY spirit, tools like this can fan that spark into a fire. It's a fine-quality tool that I expect will last beyond the point that Milwaukee stops making batteries for it in spite of being made with Chinese parts and it adds a lot of lightweight, portable versatility that will be appreciated by anybody who ever needs to screw or put a hole in something. I'm not a pro or seasoned woodworker/rehabber (yet) but I suspect it will be appreciated by the occasional picture frame-hanging homeowner who likes nice things, passionate DIYers and picky professionals alike....more info
