Customer Reviews:

  • update 4 star-- works now--- can't get it to work
update-- Customer service is prompt polite and helpful, they had me delete 2 neat folders in the twain area of the windows system and it works fine now. This only happens occasionally with some computers.
I did a couple receipts and busiess cards, the receipts are recognized properly but some of the business cards were treated as receipts so I had to redo them and not have it auto select, I selected business cards myself then it worked fine. It took me a while to figure out that the recipts have to be face down... LOL I couldn't find a picture that showed how to place the paper.
It is working fine now and I would recomend this especially since customer service is so responsive. I would give it 4 stars now, wish I could change it.

I installed it as per the directions and I keep getting a twain error that all the components can not load, please reinstall the software, I reinstalled and got the same thing? I have winxp sp2. I will try support later, right now it is the weekend and I really don't want to mess with this for hours....more info
  • Useful tool, but room for some improvements
    Vista 64-bit ok!

A couple of things to note early on here. When checking this item out I noted a review that scared me off a bit since at least one reviewer indicated that the program isn't Vista 64-bit compatible. Apparently Neatco received enough feedback to determine that 64-bit compatibility is a must and they've since released a version of their 4.0 service pack 2 software that is Vista 64-bit compatible. Knowing in advance that 64-bit compatibility might be an issue I actually went directly to Neatco's website ([...]), clicked on the Support tab there and instantly found the 'Vista 64-bit' information prominently featured there. From there I downloaded the new version directly to my PC rather than working through the installation process using the supplied CD, so I can't speak to whether or not running through that setup process and simply continuing through the 'check for new version' process would have found the required software or not. Regardless the software installed from that downloaded copy without issue, including offering the chance to download an updated version (as would have happened if I had gone through the installation process from the cd). Since the Vista 64-bit version that was downloaded was current, of course no updated version was found.

The installation continued normally, as I installed the software (as recommended) prior to hooking the scanner up to my PC. After the software was installed, I proceeded to hook the scanner up to the PC and continued through the 'Getting Started' guide that came with the device and software. With the software installed the next step is the process of calibrating the device and that is where the first real stumbling block comes into play. Apparently there is a known issue with getting the 'White mobile scanner' to complete the calibration process (as in, the calibration process will never be successful). According to the support area/trouble shooting area at the Neatco website this is an issue that is known and for which Neatco is working on a solution but for now a workaround is provided. That work around seems to involve downloading a file that contains the calibration values that would need to exist on your computer (so that the software thinks the device was calibrated). The only real problem with that is that if the device isn't close to the factory default the calibration might really need to take place to make the scans more readable. Until a real solution is reached, the provided workaround is ok, but just that.

Once you get beyond that calibration issue you could proceed through the video that demonstrates how the device and software works, though the software is fairly intuitive, at least to get started with. From a few sample scans that I performed I was impressed with the software's ability to make out the information on the folded and creased receipts that I flattened and ran through the scanner. The only real problem is that the scanner seems to work best when a receipt is turned sideways so that the longest edge of the receipt lines up with the length of the scanner. If you try to run a receipt through by leading with the short edge of the receipt the receipt will likely shift somewhat sideways on it's own in turn blurring the scanned image and possibly making it difficult to have the software recognize the data from it.

Years ago, back when I was a fully fledged road warrior the Neat Receipts software and this portable scanner would be invaluable, even with the few flaws I've noted here. Since I'm not working a job that involves regular business travel, the usage (for me) isn't as high in that area as it once would have been. On the other hand there remains the ability to scan business card information or any other document, so even if not being used for receipt scanning, there is a lot of potential value to this device and software.

In an effort to do a more thorough review of this item and also as part of trying to solve the calibration issue noted above, I did try to contact the manufacturer for technical support. The 866 (toll free) number was easy enough to find on the Quick Start guide, and the phone system was simple to navigate through in order to get into the technical support que. Once I connected, through to that que I was informed that there were 4 other customers in line ahead of me and that the technical support staff would take my call shortly. In the interim I was also navigating through the support areas on the manufacturer's website and of course the knowledge base there had the calibration issue with white mobile scanner right there to find. From either approach it was obvious that the company is aware of the issues that customers are encountering and is ready to provide assistance as needed. Another big plus for the manufacturer's phone support is a fairly long window for calling in for support: 9am-9pm Monday through Friday (Eastern time), and 9am-4pm (again, Eastern time) on Saturdays. Additionally support is available via Live Chat (through the company's website) Monday through Friday from 9am-4pm (Eastern).

As I wrap up this review it's time to ask and answer the question: "Would I recommend the purchase of this device", to which I'd answer a fairly emphatic Yes! While it may seem a bit expensive, it would likely fairly quickly pay for itself as you scan receipts and make processing expense report information an easier chore. Additionally the Neat Receipts software's ability to turned scanned information into database records makes searching for information possible and that too is quite useful....more info

  • A fine product, but the software still needs help
I own both the NeatDesk and now the NeatReceipts scanner as well. I really like NeatReceipts a lot and it's mostly due to its size. The thing is seriously tiny and portable, but seems very well-built. Since I already had the NeatWorks software installed, the unit was basically plug and play for me, with the exception of a required calibration that only took a few seconds. But even back when I first installed the NeatDesk scanner, I found the operation of the unit and most software applications to be fairly intuitive.

Apparently, they are still refining the software and it appears that it's not ready for Prime Time just yet. My biggest beef relates to the size of the scanned images. For example, I scanned a very simple and sparse letter and the file size was nearly 3.5 mb with no obviously simple way to reduce it.

I e-mailed Neat to ask them about this problem and was told that the size issue was a problem that would be addressed in a forthcoming software release. I was impressed that they responded on a pre-Memorial Day Sunday, but I wanted to ask them when this new software would be released and whether or not the upgrade would be offered free of charge to existing users. I clicked on the link to reply, but was told that I needed a password. I clicked on the "forgot password" link and received another e-mail stating that I didn't have a password. I tried to create a new account so I could continue my conversation but that was blocked because the e-mail address was already in use. In other words, there was no simple way to continue the conversation via e-mail with the customer service agent.

So their customer service seems prompt and responsive, but there's another issue that I'd suggest changing. Requiring a password to reply, and then stating that there is no password and not letting the customer create one doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If anyone from Neat is reading this, perhaps they could address this issue, as you want to make the communication process seamless and convenient for your customers.

Character recognition seemed quite good and I thought that the speed was decent as well. The NeatReceipts scanner comes with a soft carrying case, the USB connector, NeatWorks software and mine also came with a handy complimentary ABBYY PDF Transformer Pro 2.0, which allows one to create, edit and convert documents to and from the .pdf format. I think that a slightly newer version of this software retails for about $49, so it's a nice little extra.

I really do like the product though. It's really compact and very useful. I live in a small place and I don't have a lot of extra room for clutter. You can sore this little scanner almost anywhere. The digital character recognition feature is obviously a big plus, especially in a tiny unit like this one. Again, the software's not quite there yet, but it's solid in many respects and it sounds like they're working on fixing the shortcomings.

I'd definitely recommend this product. Were it not for the software issues, I'd give it a 5 star rating. But at the same time, I'd suggest to Neat that they should offer the upgraded software to existing users at no cost because the current software is inadequate in at least some respects.

  • Beware of upgrade issues
Beware... I used this product happily for years.. I recently upgraded the software -- after being assured by customer support that the upgrade would work with my version -- and have not been able to migrate over 10 years of receipts. The company had the nerve to recommend I reinstall the last version -- print the receipts -- and scan them each in... I estimate that would take me about 60 hours of work. so I'm stuck now -- and have lost a lot of data I spent hours scanning in... I would not trust this company to support you over the long run. And of course, with tax records, that is vital. Let the buyer beware.......more info
  • It's Going Back to Costco Tonight!
Neatco tech support keeps you on hold for longer than 10 minutes. Their online support is worse - now my operating system is having issues. I've given up on your product. I've had to call twice regarding error messages when I attempt to open the software that came with the scanner. Obviously, the 'out of box' experience hasn't been great for me.

I bought the mini/travel scanner with carrying case from Costco for [...]. It was an impulse purchase that I thought would help me organize my receipts. From the moment I loaded the software, it has been a hassle.

I went to Neatco's website for suggestions. After messing with my SQL Dumper, as the website instructs, my OS is now giving me error messages.

I called Neatco's tech support two days ago. "Jeff" told me he'd email my "simple soluton" to complete on my own. I did. Still no success.

After having spent so many hours fighting with the software installation, I needed a break from it. So I left it alone yesterday. Today, I cleared everything out so I could start from scratch. STILL NO LUCK!

    I am done! Mitra...more info

  • NeatWorks is Neat
It made filling out some documents for my lawyer so easy. Scanned and Created PDF doc and then converted to MSWord and MSXcel docs that I could fill in/edit and then save electronically on my computer and print out for my lawyer. No mess making and correcting errors, etc. I'm thoroughly enjoying using it to accomplish many different tasks...more info
  • Neat Receipt not so user friendly
The neat receipt scanner came and setup was easy. The description of the scanner gave the impression that the scanner software would fill in the information from the receipt as it was scanned. This is not the case, all of the information had to be filled in by hand. Very annoying!! Sent the unit back for a refund but did not get the shipping back even though the scanner did not operate as expected. Also annoying!!

Ordered the Visioneer RoadWarrior. This scanner works great. The Visioneer does not ask you for any information and uses the date with a number series for the file name. This number is changeable as well....more info
  • GREAT Product if you READ THE MANUAL!
I've eliminated mountains of paper from my desk using this product. After installing the software and calibrating the scanner it took me little time to record and store my documents electronically. The key is to read over the manual to expose the more useful features of this product such as dragging pages of a multi-page document together to form a single document and how to properly edit a reciept after it has been scanned. Also make sure that if/when you backup your database that it goes to an external media such as an external hard drive, flash drive, or cd.

Reading in an arbitrary document and extracting information from it is a DIFFICULT computer science problem (I'm a CS Grad Student) and this program does a pretty good job of pulling info from what are now commonly cluttered receipts. Follow the instructions carefully for setup, watch the video they provide, read over the manual [....], check out the video tutorials [....] and you'll discover just how useful this software can be....more info
  • This was a total bust!!!!!
I havenot yet been able to use this product. I first had a great deal of trouble loading it and then have not been able to calibrate the scanner. Customer service has actually been very good. Apparently this is a problem they have been running into with the platform of Microsoft XP. They are working to resolve the issue with their programmers, but its been 3 weeks with no resolution. They have offered to refund my $, which I will take them up on. My purpose for buying it was for tax preparation and that will soon be past....more info
  • Good service but weakness in software
Amazonservice excellent as usual. (5 stars)

The scanner itself works as described, the scanning of business cards and receipts is fast (4 stars).
The software does not recognize international business cards and has problems with receipts (missed decimal points, tax not properly identifed). Filing system is good but the software has some weaknesses in ocr (2-3 stars).

Customer Service of neatreceipts is outstanding - I lost the installation CD and got via live online support the installation package and new s/n within 10 min. Great job ! (5 stars)...more info
  • Beware - Not Backward Compatible
I have been using NeatReceipts for a couple of years now. I generally like the product, but I am now using BOTH the 'Classic ver 1.5.9" and the new Ver 4.0 software because Neat Receipts broke a covenant with it early adopters. They broke two of the cardinal rules of product development (1) never, ever, under any circumstances forget your early customers and their data (2) never remove vital features of the product.

First, they "forgot" their "Classic ver 1.5.9" users. Versions of the software from 2.0 up thru the current ver 4.1 cannot reconize or import any of the receipts or documents scanned into the earlier version. I have personally talked to then about this for almost 2 years. At first, in early 2007, they repeatedly stated that they were hard at work on migration solution. We depended on that statement telling them how important it was for us to be able to access our archived data - for inventories, insurance and tax records.

But they finally just abandoned this effort and offered everyone a discount to upgrade to a later version. How is that going to help with restoring archived data? The data and file formats for their .elrec and .eldoc seem fairly simple - a scanned image and some recognized text fields. Why can't they import those formats like they allow for jpeg and tiff images?

They offered no acceptable reasons beyond that we are no longer working on that feature and would you like to upgrade. They seem to be oblivious to the frustrations they have caused a large number of their customers. We even communicated with Rafi Spero, one of the companies owners. If he couldn't make it happen, you know they don't care about you as a customer. BEWARE THIS COMPANY.

Secondly: The "Classic" version allowed users to create folders and subfolders, etc. This was a fantastic way to organize receipts for cash, various credit cards, checks and debits, by year and then by month. Or to organize a copy of receipts for an inventory by broad categories and then further by store, year or vendor. So the initial features of both subfolders and the ability to copy receipts from yearly tax records to inventory folders was extremely useful and helpful in elimnating paperwork clutter.

The new ver 4 software does not support nested folders or copying receipts to other folders. Every time you scan a receipt, it goes into a folder. But all folders are on the same level. You can show and hide folders, but this is an extremely clumsy process and causes users a lot of extra work in trying to organize their invoices and receipts. If you want to copy a receipt, you have to scan it AGAIN. How brain-dead is that?

Bottom Line: This company has proven that, at their convenience, they will ignore or abandon prior versions of the software and remove vital features.

To fix some of their current short-coming, as mentioned above, it would not surprise me to see them create a new version of their software that is incompatible with they are selling today.

DO NOT TRUST them with any vital data that you may need in the future.

  • Thank You Neat Co. & Amazon
If your looking to store your receipts for insurance or tax purposes, look no further. Neat Receipts Model 0346 is your solution.I was amazed at how well this scanner works. I have stored receipts in boxes for years, just in case I ever need them for insurance purposes.I was amazed at how well the scanner works scanning my old receipts. I was afraid that a lot of my older receipts would not scan, because they faded from old age, but I was wrong, only a few receipts did not scan properly.
